A fire that broke out at a Covina apartment complex left eight people injured and displaced 10 families on Sunday, April 7, authorities said.

The blaze broke out in a single unit on the third floor of the complex along the 1100 block of Conwell Avenue around 2 p.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Melanie Flores. Crews managed to contain the flames to the unit and extinguished the fire in about an hour.

Eight people were taken to a hospital with mild to moderate injuries. Information on how they were injured was not immediately released. About 10 families living in the complex were displaced by the blaze, though how many people that included was not immediately available, Flores said. The Red Cross was contacted to assist those displaced.

Crews were still at the scene late in the afternoon working to assess the damage to the building, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation on Sunday.
