Port Arthur restaurant works hard to keep doors open in wake of boil water notice

The boil water notice which started on on Saturday and is still currently in effect, had a major impact on local restaurants.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — In wake of Port Arthur's boil water notice that was issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental quality due to a water main leak, restaurants like Reel Cajun Seafood Restaurant and Bar are working to keep their doors open.

 "So the water pressure was affected drastically. To the point where we had to go to takeout only," said General Manager of Reel Cajun Seafood, Skyler Peters.

The boil water notice which started on on Saturday and is still currently in effect, had a major impact on local restaurants.

Low water pressure in the bathroom is forcing Reel Cajun Seafood Restaurant and Bar to scale back.

"That's why we had to do the take out only, because that's one of the requirements in order to be open fully," said Peters.

On Sunday the restaurant was able to open it's dining room back up to customers.

"At the moment we're not doing any soda because of the beverage station, we did get some bottled water and also had to get fresh ice shipped to me this morning," Peters said.

The General Manager says the restaurants main draw is it's boiled crawfish.

"We have a lot of loyalty here, the crawfish is a big thing here and it's very important for us to maintain," Peters said.

Restaurant regular, Bobby comes to Reel Cajun Seafood Restaurant and Bar every other week from his home in Katy to get his crawfish fix.

"They have very good crawfish," said Bobby.

Fortunately, the boil water notice hasn't impacted the restaurant cooking the tasty crustaceans.

"You know, since we're boiling it it's okay by the standard there," said Peters.

According to Port Arthur Mayor, Thurman Bartie, crews are working diligently to fix the water main leak by this evening, and the TCEQ will take samples of the water and test it. 

Bartie has this message for Port Arthur residents in the meantime.

"I would recommend 24 hours of the 'boil water' approach for safety. Thanks to all who are and have worked to alleviate this situation and I ask for a little more patience," said Bartie.

The employees at Reel Cajun will continue to pivot to keep customers fed. 

"To persevere through the hard times here, with any obstacles we try to adapt that way our customers, our guests can still get served our awesome crawfish," said Peters.
