Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has relived the memories of how shaken he was when he heard that a Kenyatta University bus accident had claimed the lives of 11 students and left several others injured.

Speaking on Sunday at the Kenyatta University grounds during an interfaith thanksgiving session, Machogu said he feared how the future of Kenyatta University would be after the accident.

"The entire situation was so sad that in my mind I even thought how is it going to be among the students,  among the comrades," Machogu said.

He, however, thanked the students for remaining calm and respecting their departed colleagues, saying he is glad that calm has been maintained at K.U.

"The calmness, the tranquility we had during that particular period in K.U was like no other. You are wonderful people. Our students I say pongezi," Machogu added.

The CS went on to encourage the students to shun peer pressure, which leads to bad behaviour, including drug and substance abuse.

Machogu said the youth are the backbone of the country and should work hard to become better people in society.

K.U Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina said 18 of the students in the accident sustained serious injuries. 17 of the injured have since been discharged. One of them is still in ICU.

"We continue lifting all the survivors in prayers. We continue praying for Oscar as he battles for his life," Wainaina said.

The March 18 accident in Maungu near Voi killed 11 students who were on a trip to the coast.
