Apr. 11—On April 6, leaders from Athens, Limestone County and the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives moved one shovelful closer to having a memorial park at the museum.

A structure had to be cleared before work could begin constructing the park, and Saturday an audience was able to witness fruits of those efforts resulting from a $1 million appropriation from Gov. Kay Ivey for renovations to the museum building in May 2022.

Museum director Sandy Thompson said in a previous interview that the park will have a burn pit for retiring flags, monuments to all the wars and possibly even service emblems in the ground.

"It's going to be beautiful," Thompson said in a previous interview with The News Courier.

Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks and Limestone County Commission Chairman Colin Daly both spoke at the event of the future of the park and its value to both the museum and Athens-Limestone.
