Write-in votes from April election bring two political newcomers to the Door County Board

The supervisor seats in Districts 8 and 19 had no registered candidates for the April 2 election, so the write-in votes were needed to fill the seats

DOOR COUNTY - The County Board will have three newcomers to local politics in its seats when it next meets on Tuesday.

That's after two board races that had no registered candidates in the April 2 election, in Districts 8 and 19, were won by two men who will gain public office for the first time following this past Tuesday's certification by the Board of Canvassers of write-in votes.

Collin Jeanquart and Patrick Voight received the most write-in votes for supervisors for those districts. Jeanquart received four of the 14 votes cast in District 8 while Voight won four of 28 in District 19. No one else won more than two votes in either district.

If a County Board seat has no registered candidates, those seats are offered to the person who wins the highest number of write-in votes. However, the winners are not obligated to accept the seats. If they don’t, the board will ask people to submit letters of interest for the position and appoint someone to fill it.

County Clerk Jill Lau said Jeanquart and Voight were notified of their wins and both accepted their seats. Terms on the board are for two years.

Jeanquart and Voight will join Ryan Shaw as County Board supervisors with no previous experience in public office. Shaw defeated Jonathan Kruse in the election to win the District 9 race to replace retiring superintendent Dan Austad.

Jeanquart is president and CEO of Just in Time Corp., a family-owned custom distributor in Sturgeon Bay. He hasn't previously held or run for public office but currently is on the board of the Door County Medical Center Foundation and has been a board member for several other community organizations on the Peninsula, including the Boys & Girls Club and Raibrook Foundation.

Voight, an Ellison Bay native and Sister Bay resident, is a senior information security consultant for a Fox Valley-based business networking and information company, according to his LinkedIn page. He served in the U.S. Navy for 17 years and hasn't previously sought a municipal office, although he ran unsuccessfully for the Gibraltar School Board in 2022.
