About 300 candidates will be on the ballot sheets when Bristol residents go to the polls on May 2 to decide the new political make-up of the city council. The hopefuls are standing across 34 wards, all battling to be elected into one of the 70 seats in the council chamber.

They include several names that will be familiar to those who follow local politics closely. Among them are grassroots campaigners, an ex-MP, the outgoing Avon & Somerset deputy police and crime commissioner, losing candidates to be both Bristol city mayor and West of England metro mayor and at least seven former Bristol city councillors.

There are 50 incumbents standing for reelection, which means at least 20 new faces from the results of the last polls in 2021. The four main parties – Labour, Green, Conservative and Lib Dems – are putting up the maximum number of candidates to contest every seat, along with the two for Knowle Community Party who currently hold both of those in Knowle.
