YOUNGSTOWN – A production of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” that will mix professional actors with local talent will kick off Youngstown Playhouse’s 100th anniversary season.

The Playhouse announced plans for its centennial season at a live event Saturday at the community theater located off Glenwood Avenue.

“Beautiful” will be staged Aug. 23 to 25 at Powers Auditorium and directed by Matthew Mazuroski. John Cox, president of the Playhouse’s board, said they will be bringing in a performer with national tour experience to play King, an inductee into both the Rock & Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. She penned dozens of pop hits for others with her then-husband Gerry Goffin before launching a successful career as a singer-songwriter.

Professional actors will be used for one or two additional roles, Cox said, with the rest of the production being cast locally.

“Beautiful” ran for nearly six years and more than 2,400 performances on Broadway, and it received seven Tony nominations in 2014, winning for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical and best sound design.

The Playhouse worked with Youngstown native Michael J. Moritz Jr., who was a producer on “Beautiful,” to secure the rights to the musical.

The rest of the season will take place at the Playhouse and includes three Main Stage productions, two shows in the Moyer Room and two Playhouse Youth Theatre offerings.

Sept. 20 — The musical “Something Rotten,” directed by Emma Wason

Feb. 21, 2025 – The drama “The Gem of the Ocean,” directed by Lundeana Thomas

May 9, 2025 – The musical “Oklahoma,” directed by Tyler Stouffer

Coming to the Moyer Room will be:

Nov. 15 – The satirical comedy “The Thanksgiving Play,” directed by Pat Foltz

June 6, 2025 – The romantic comedy “Almost Maine,” directed by Mario Ricciardi

Playhouse Youth Theatre presents:

Oct. 25 – The comedy “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic,” directed by Jim Canacci

March 28, 2025 – The musical “The Lightning Thief,” directed by Eden Lesnansky

Main Stage and Moyer Room shows each run for two weekends. Playhouse Youth Theatre productions run for one weekend.

Also planned is a 100th anniversary gala on June 21, 2025.
