ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — Interstate 95 in Nash County near Rocky Mount was closed for six hours after a major crash with injuries that involved a tractor-trailer Sunday afternoon.
The crash around 12:45 p.m. closed all I-95 northbound lanes at Mile Marker 141, in Dortches, near N.C. 43, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The crash with injuries involved a tractor-trailer that overturned, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.
The highway was closed for hours as crews had to first adjust the wrecked tractor-trailer and then remove it from I-95.
Officials set up a detour with motorists turning right on Exit 141 (N.C. 43), then left on North Halifax Road and back to I-95 north.
Officials initially said the highway would be clear by 1:45 p.m. but that time was later moved back to 6 p.m. The highway later reopened around 6:40 p.m.
Traffic was backed up two miles just after the highway reopened, according to the NCDOT.
No other information was available from the highway patrol or NCDOT.
