BRISTOL, Maine (WMTW) - Repairs are underway at the iconic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol.

The bell house at the lighthouse was largely destroyed in a January storm. It was struck by waves breaking over 20 feet and wind gusts of 79 mph, according to Shelley Gallagher, beach manager for Bristol’s parks and recreation department.

Parks and Recreation Department officials said the bell was removed from the bell house on Sunday to prepare for work that will begin this week. A brick mason will be creating a wood box-type structure inside to stabilize the building for the work. The actual brick work will start when the weather warms. The hope is to start that work in early-to-mid May.

Crews have already been replacing the siding on the main lighthouse building and that work is expected to finish this week.

The nearly 200-year-old lighthouse is featured on the state quarter and is a popular coastal destination.
