U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis (both R-WY) joined Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and 41 of their colleagues in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer demanding he fulfill his constitutional duties to properly adjudicate the U.S. House of Representatives’ Articles of Impeachment against U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas with a full Senate trial.
"Our brave men and women at Customs and Border Protection have worked tirelessly to make our nation safer, yet with 7.5 million encounters since President Biden took office, our southern border is a national security disaster. Encounters in fiscal year 2023 increased a startling 440% over fiscal year 2020. The border crisis under Secretary Mayorkas has become a nightmare for the American people,” said the Senators. “The House of Representatives has considered this evidence and impeached Secretary Mayorkas. Our constitutional duty requires the Senate to hold a trial. In every previous congressional impeachment of the past 227 years, Congress has been faithful to the process set out by the framers. Never before has the Senate abandoned this duty, even when certain members believed the basis for impeachment was tenuous at best.”
In our country’s more than 200-year history, the U.S. House of Representatives has sent Articles of Impeachment to the Senate just 21 times, and the Senate has fulfilled its responsibility to adjudicate each time unless the subject either resigned or was removed from office before Articles of Impeachment were delivered.
The majority of Americans believe the Mayorkas Department of Homeland Security willfully refused to enforce border security laws with 78% of Republicans, 35% of Democrats and 61% of Independents sharing this sentiment.
