West Michigan man killed in plane crash in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOOD/WATE) — A West Michigan man was killed when a small plane crashed near Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday afternoon.

James Evan Scarlett, 45, was the CEO of Scarlett Inc., a woodworking solutions company based in Kentwood.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the single-engine Piper PA-32 crashed near a road in the community of Claxton, north of Knoxville around 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to WATE, WOOD TV8’s sister station in Knoxville. The plane had taken off from McGhee Tyson Airport, south of Knoxville, and and was bound for Gerald R. Ford International Airport near Grand Rapids, the Anderson County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said the plane was found in some woods, while plane parts and luggage were found along nearby roads. No homes were damaged, the sheriff’s office told WATE.

Scarlett died at the scene. His body was taken to the Knox County Regional Forensics Center.

His aircraft will be taken to Atlanta for further examination.

The National Transportation Safety Board is in charge of the investigation.
