Socorro Independent School District hosted its 36th annual Spring Games on Wednesday.

The event, which is in memory of James P. Butler, was held at the Student Activities Complex from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for elementary students and 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for secondary students.

More than 1,000 students with special needs participated in 270 track and field events, including 10- and 25-meter walks, assisted walks and 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter runs, relay and wheelchair races (with and without assistance), and a unified relay race.

After finishing their event, students enjoyed the Fun Zone.

Parents, families, teachers, students, volunteers, and community members attended the event to support the student-athletes and assist with the activities.

Both sessions began with a mini parade featuring athletes, SISD administrators, teachers, staff, and volunteers.

Athletes who participate in the SISD event are eligible to compete in the area Special Olympics Spring Games and other year-round sports at the city and statewide levels.

“We come together every year, to celebrate our athletes who prepare. We run different races. It is the 36th annual," said Analia Jansen special education director. “We had over 1,200 students enroll to participate in the races today. So it is one of our largest events."

“This is a way for him to showcase his ability. My son participated in the 100 meters but he’s been telling all night about the event," said Jonathan Brooks a parent.
