Two young men (20s) die following separate road crashes in Kerry and Cork

Two young men in their 20s have died following road crashes in Cork and Kerry.

The incidents occurred on the N25 in the townland of Ballyedekin near Midleton, Cork, and on the N69 at Banemore, Listowel, County Kerry

The collision in Cork involved an articulated lorry and a car while in Listowel, two cars collided.

The driver of the car in Cork, a man aged in his early 20s, was fatally injured during the collision.

His body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital.

No other injuries were reported as a result of this collision.

Gardaí and emergency services in Listowel responded after two cars collided on the N69 at Banemore around 9pm on Wednesday night.

A male passenger in his 20s from one car sustained serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital Kerry where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

Three other individuals were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment, their injures are not life threatening.

The N69 (Listowel to Tralee road) has since reopened to traffic after examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The local Coroner has been notified.

It brings to 63 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year – 15 more than for the same period last year.

Gardaí urge witnesses to come forward. Road users on the N69 between Tralee and Listowel yesterday evening from 8:30 pm to 9:15 pm with camera footage, including dash cam, are requested to provide it to investigators.

The collision in Cork occurred near Loughaderra townland.

Emergency services are at the scene and a partial road closure has been implemented to facilitate the work of fire brigade personnel and paramedics.

Gardaí said diversions are in place via Mogeely, with the N25 currently closed between Midleton and Castlemartyr.

Gardaí are examining the scene to try to determine the precise circumstances of the tragedy.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area or to allow additional time for their journeys given the traffic diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users who were travelling on the N25 between Midleton and Castlemartyr this morning between 7.00am and 7.45am and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Two other crashes occurred in Cork today, though no serious injuries were reported in the incidents outside Castletownroche in north Cork and at Mahon near the entrance to the Jack Lynch tunnel.

The fatal collision in east Cork is the second in the space of four days in the area. A pedestrian in his 40s died last Sunday morning when he was struck by a car as he was walking near Water Rock on the outskirts of Midleton.
