Blank Park Zoo announced the construction of two major exhibits to add space for a handful of animals.
The Ruan Foundation Wild Iowa exhibit will feature larger areas for river otters, bald eagles and bobcats to roam.
It will also give visitors a chance to take behind-the-scenes tours within the new facilities.
The Marjorie A. Foster Lion exhibit will triple the amount of space they have — giving them more to climb and more places to go during the winter.
There will also be a training space large enough for tours to get closer to the lions.
Blank Park Zoo's President and CEO Anne Shimerdla said one of the main reasons for the changes is to improve zoo viewing for visitors.
"Part of the reason we're doing these projects is to look at our guests' experience," Shimerdla said. "One of my other favorite opportunities is a tunnel that will go into the otter pool for all the kids or kids at heart that come to the zoo. They'll want to experience the otters in a different way, where the otters can swim all around us."
Shimerdla said she plans on opening the Marjorie A. Foster Lion Exhibit in 2025 and the Ruan Foundation Wild Iowa Exhibit in 2026.
She said construction will begin on both this summer after the zoo has raised all the funds it needs for the exhibits.
