AUSTIN (KXAN) — An arrest warrant was issued for who police believe is a suspected organizer of a July 2023 street takeover in Austin.

On July 29, 2023, the Austin Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the events, which ended at the intersection of South Lamar Boulevard and Barton Springs Road. Three people were taken to the hospital after the street takeover, according to police.

“In street takeovers, intersections are blocked and taken over by rings of vehicles and spectators, who watch high-performance vehicles perform stunts in ‘the pit,'” court records said.

Additionally, reckless conduct during street takeovers are done by people who do “burn outs, drift-driving, doughnuts, and ‘ghostriding,’ where drivers climb out of the moving vehicle,” according to the affidavit.

Court records show a breakdown of messages exchanged between the organizer, Jacobi Patrick Erickson, 20, and another person days leading up to the events in Austin. This included when Erickson purchased a Dodge Challenger RT on July 25, 2023, four days before the street takeover.

The message exchanges all happened on Instagram, which included Erickson and the other person discussing calling the San Antonio Police Department to tell them the street takeover would happen there instead to throw off APD, according to the affidavit.

Erickson then livestreamed video as he was telling his followers where to go next and what to do during the street takeover, court documents said. He also did “burn outs, donuts and vehicle stunts” for about 12 to 15 minutes.

The arrest warrant shows Erickson is wanted on a charge of engaging in organized criminal activity.
