Theon Design has unveiled its latest bespoke Porsche 911 (964) commission and its first open-top Targa model.
As with every Theon Design commission, this GBR003 is an entirely bespoke creation. It comes fitted with an all-carbon body, a six-speed manual transmission, and a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine. All of Theon Design's cars are created at its production facility in Oxfordshire, U.K.
To create the GBR003, Theon's technicians strip the donor car, a Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2 Targa, right to the bare metal. The car's body is replaced with an all-carbon one, save for the doors, which remain as steel item to provide the car with the necessary side impact protection. Each panel in the car is digitalised and modelled in 3D design software, to ensure a perfect fit. Carbon panels are also utilised to strengthen the car's underfloor. This extensive use of carbon means the GR003 tips the scales at only 1,228kg, inclusive of all fluids.
The bespoke carbon fibre system which is used for underfloor strengthening also provides structural rigidity without additional weight.
The strengthening system takes the form of two 'tubs' which were created using a laminate 'sandwich' of toughened epoxy prepreg carbon fibre and aerospace-grade Nomex honeycomb. These tubs are designed to perfectly fit the floor of the Targa chassis before being formed to the tightest tolerances using a five-axis CNC machine.
The GBR003 is additionally fitted with a switchable five-stage TracTive Active Controlled Electronics damping system which is carefully calibrated for the Targa. This damping system enables extreme control over the vehicle, regardless of whether it is driven with the roof on or with the roof off.
Powered by a 4.0-litre flat six engine governed by independent throttle bodies and open trumpets, the motor develops a total of 403bhp at 7,100rpm. Peak torque from the engine, meanwhile, reaches 433Nm at 5,500rpm. Combined with its low kerb weight, this output ensures that the GBR003 performs effortlessly regardless of engine speed or selected gear.
Pairing with the engine in the Theon custom is a flat-six howl switchable fully ceramic exhaust system. This exhaust gives the bespoke car a quieter and reserved character in normal use, or a full motorsport-style flat-six cry when its valves are open. The exhaust valves are opened when the engine is pushed into the rev range, although a switch to activate them is also offered in the cabin.
Not only is the exterior purposeful, it is also pretty. The exterior is finished in a paint-to-sample pastel blue with a contrasting Porsche script, while its interior comes with Pepita seat centres which were also seen in the Porsche 911 (992) Sport Classic, in a light grey that matches the exterior script. These seats are trimmed in liquorice coloured semi-aniline leather.
Lighter 'ghost' stripes have also been utilised along the car's sills and bumpers. The colour of these stripes matches the 993 RS brake callipers, which are nestled behind 18-inch Fuchs wheels. These wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot 4S tyres.
The interior is further enhanced with various technological upgrades. The doors house six Focal speakers which are paired with Focal amplifiers. Further enhancing the bespoke audio set up, the car also comes with Pioneer's P99RS Bluetooth classic stereo unit. The seats also contain Focal subwoofers, delivering real depth audio performance all while saving space in the cabin.
The Targa's roof also comes completely rebuilt, ensuring it is a perfect fit for the strengthened 964 shell. This roof is finished in a modern mohair material which folds up and slots itself into a bespoke carry bag, fitting perfectly in the leather linked 'frunk'.
All of Theon Design commissions are a unique collaboration between the Theon team and its customers. Each car takes 18 months to build.
