Wellsville BOE approves renewal of Virtual Learning Academy agreement

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Board of Education approved several motions during Monday’s Meeting.

Motions approved include the renewal of the participation agreement for the Virtual Learning Academy; accepting monetary donations for the Senior Class and the Garfield Principals Fund, both in the amount of $500; naming Lisa Smith, Tracy Kosek, Cindy Craig, Lindsay Clifton, Maxine Ross, Mitchell McDowell and Joes Shimmel as chaperones for Camp Fitch from Sept. 4-6; granting permission for a field trip for the fifth and sixth grade choirs to Lincoln Park on April 26 with Lindsay Clifton, Christa McIntosh and Tracy Kose as staff chaperones; and approving the Senior Handbook for the class of 2024.

During the fiscal portion of the meeting, board members voted to accept the financial report, transfer and modifications of funds, and Then and Now Certificates.

The board voted to rescind the approval given during the March 18 meeting for the Meraki license renewal in the amount of $3,445.00 for fiscal year 2025 and approve a motion for Access’ annual fee for fiscal year 2025 for managed wireless access service for $3,445.00 and a five-year Meraki license for $13,889.18 for fiscal years 25-29. The Access contract was rescinded to change some wording in the contract and then awarded again.

Also approved during the fiscal portion of the meeting were motions for the proposal from the Ohio Floor Company in the amount of $35,600 to refinish the Wellsville High School gymnasium floor; advisory services contract with Julian & Grube in the amount of $1,125 effective April 1 through June 30; the ABC proposal for the lease of 11 units of replacement in the amount of $2,190 per month; and the agreement with NRG Gas Sales and Services and the NRG transaction confirmation renewal, both for fiscal years 2025-27. Work on the gym floor is expected to begin June 10.

During the personnel portion of the meeting, Jonathan Walker was approved as assistant baseball coach.

The resignation for retirement of Lisa Ferguson, principal, Garfield Elementary School, effective Aug. 9, was accepted. The board also approved and a motion to approve Shelbie Householder with a three-year contract to fill the position of principal at Garfield Elementary School. Superintendent Richard Bereschik said he wished Ferguson the best of luck and noted that Ferguson recommended Householder for the position.

Board President Gary Althiser said the district would miss Ferguson and he knows the community really loves her.

Ferguson, who has been with the district for 45 years, said she knows Garfield is going to continue to grow and be a good foundation for the kids.

The resignations of Cindy Reed, Garfield Elementary School secretary effective Aug. 2, 2024, and the resignation of Beth Swogger from the Senior Class Advisor supplemental contract were also approved.

A one-year contract for Melissa Hudson, PhD, as assistant high principal for the 2024-2025 school year and a three-year contract for Erin Clemmer as principal for Daw Elementary School were also approved.

Brandee Vallera was approved as an addition to the substitute list.

The non-renewal of all certified and non-certified substitutes was approved.

A motion to non-renew the following athletic and classified supplemental contracts at the end of the their current contract seasons was approved: assistant football coaches Gregory Beatty II, Derrick Spann, Jordan Sloan, Cavan LeMasters and Marcus Dalrymple; weight lifting Shane Reed and Michael Bess; jr. high football Derrick Suggs and Jesse Jackson; varsity boys basketball assistant coach John Stoakes; varsity girls basketball assistant coach Lonnie Fields, jr. high basketball Derrick Suggs, Jesse Jackson and Anthony Ross; jr. high basketball and golf John Stoakes; varsity volleyball assistant coach Jaedyn Hissam; jr. high volleyball Jayla Corbin and Payton Munoz; athletic director Mark Jones; bus trip coordinator Mark Jones; softball head coach Jeff Weekley and assistant coaches Alvan Thompson and Sherri Weekley; track assistant coaches Daivd Thompson and Lonnie Fields; jr. high track Justin Gregg and Nate Scott; bowling head coach Dale Palmer and assistant coach (Paul) Allen Bergert; wrestling volunteer head coach Gary Althiser and assistant coaches Jacob McNemar, Thomas Redman and jr. high coach Nate Ketchum; Jr. class sponsor Marie Martin and baseball head coach Charles Heffner and assistant coaches Connor Ramsey and Jonathan Walker. Bereschik said that the contracts were not being renewed as a matter of law and that one-year contracts need to be posted but it is still up to the board on who to hire.

Continuing contracts were approved for Nicole Camilletti and Leah Prescott.

The board approved Blaine Patterson, a 2009 Wellsville graduate as the 2024 commencement speaker.

Ferguson invited the board to come to McDonalds on Wednesday night for Teachers Night where the teachers will be cooking fries and flipping burgers to raise money for Garfield Elementary School.

Richard Schilling, principal, Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School, noted that prom is Friday, and the weather has the school behind on sports.

Ed Swogger, buildings and grounds, suggested when the gym floor is done that might be a good time to create a memorial for the late Don Elliott and rename the gym after him. Board member Dale Palmer said he would rather see a tribute to Elliott on the gym floor where more people will see it. Swogger said he had seen some gym floors where they had the person’s signature painted on the floor. There will be further discussions on this. A decision will need to be made before work begins in June on the floor.

The board adjourned into an executive session for the purpose of employment. They returned to the regular meeting with no action taken.

The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School Media Center. The next regular meeting is scheduled for May 20.
