Person stabbed, hospitalized after intervening in El Paso County domestic assault

El Paso County sheriff's deputies arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a neighbor who was trying to intervene during a domestic violence assault in eastern El Paso County, officials said.

The Venezuelan citizen was arrested April 13 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault family violence, sheriff's officials said in a news release. The man's name had not been disclosed.

A neighbor allegedly saw the married couple fighting and tried to separate them when the husband stabbed him with a knife in the hip area, a state prosecutor said at a teleconference bond hearing for the suspect on Monday, April 15.

The man's wife told deputies that her husband hit her several times in the face. The husband allegedly admitted to slapping his wife, but claimed it was in self-defense, the prosecutor said.

The Venezuelan man has been in El Paso for about four months with his wife and two stepchildren, ages 7 and 5 years old, court officials said at the hearing.

Stabbing on Bachimba Drive

The stabbing occurred April 13 in the 13000 block of Bachimba Drive, located off Darrington Road near the eastern end of Pebble Hills Drive in a desert neighborhood north of Horizon City.

About 10 a.m., a deputy assigned to University Medical Center of El Paso was informed about a patient who had been the victim of a stabbing, officials said.

The victim's brother told deputies that the alleged assailant and his spouse were having a fight when the victim attempted to intervene and was stabbed, officials said. The victim's medical condition and other information was not disclosed. Deputies arrested the alleged assailant.

Judge declines to lower bond amount

At the Monday's hearing, Magistrate Judge Linda Estrada refused to lower the bonds set at $15,000 for the aggravated assault charge and $3,000 for the family violence-assault case citing the nature of the crime and the safety of the community.

The accused stabber has an immigration jail hold — meaning that even if he were to make bail, he would be remanded into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
