ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy had his work cut out for him after responding to a crash in northwest Albuquerque last month.

Bodycam video shows just how hard it was to take a man into custody.

Frank Vargas is facing numerous charges after fighting with a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy back on March 29.

Deputy Ryan Moore was responding to a crash near Paseo del Norte and 2nd when he learned the driver had taken off.

Vargas reportedly ran from Deputy Moore, who kept up, until Vargas turned around and was tackled to the ground.

Deputy Moore later described what happened during their fight.

“I was on top of, I was on his back, and I threw my legs in, and he turned it. He turned me over, and he was able to like, kind of, turn himself over again, and he tried to put his legs around me like in a full guard, I guess,” he stated.

The deputy was able to break away.

Backup arrived and helped take Vargas into custody, and Deputy Moore explained what happened.

Medics were called in to check on the deputy and Vargas, who they believe was drunk when he crashed. Vargas is facing charges for leaving the scene of an accident, evading police, battery on a peace officer, and aggravated DWI.
