It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Aaron Rodgers earned the lowest performance-based pay in the NFL in 2023.
Rodgers, of course, was injured just four plays into the Jets’ season opener against the Bills on Sept. 11, kickstarting a chaotic year for Gang Green at quarterback.
Because of that, Rodgers received just $81.14 in performance-based pay, ESPN Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday.
“The system rewards all NFL players based on their play time and base salary. If a player has a low base salary but plays a significant number of snaps, he earns more through the system,” Schefter explained in a post on X.
“With Rodgers having the opposite — a high salary and playing just 0.33% of snaps due to his torn Achilles — his total amount came to $81.14.”
By comparison, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy made $739,795 under the player-performance program, with his base salary being $985,000 in 2023, the second year of his rookie deal.
New Jets guard John Simpson, who was a member of the Ravens last season, made the most in performance-based pay, pulling in $974,613.
The league paid out a total of $393.8 million through the program for the 2023 season.
The Jets and Rodgers are surely hoping his number goes up in 2024 since it would mean he’d be on the field more frequently than he was in 2023.
Rodgers has had an interesting offseason, which included reports that he was being considered for running mate by independent presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy instead tapped Nicole Shanahan to be his vice president pick.
On Monday, a post by Del Norte High School’s football team announced that Rodgers was joining its coaching staff, though it was later confirmed to be an April Fool’s Day joke by the San Diego school.
