Thursday sports roundup: WHS softball team loses to Windom, girls golf wins third straight meet

Other area sports highlights include the JCC baseball team walking off Redwood Valley and area track teams competing in Windom.

Baseball

Murray County Central 4, Adrian/Ellsworth 2

ADRIAN – The Murray County Central baseball team came away with a nice road victory over Red Rock Conference rival Adrian/Ellsworth.

The Dragons fall to 1-3 on the season while the Rebels improve to 2-1.

After the first two innings went scoreless, MCC struck first with three runs in the top of the third. A/E scored once in the bottom of the third and both teams tacked on a run in the sixth inning after that.

Krew Schneider earned the win for the Rebels after pitching five and a third innings, striking out seven batters and giving up four hits. Owen Gillette and Teague Meyer finished the game and collected four combined strikeouts.

Meyer also had two hits as a batter while Aidan Dierks, Dylan Kluis and Schneider each had an RBI.

Matthew Geister pitched a complete game for the Dragons and he struck out six and allowed eight hits. He also had one of Adrian’s four hits along with Reese Morrison collecting one and Joe Rahe collecting two.

The Dagons will play at Pipestone on Friday while the Rebels will host Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Monday.

Edgerton/SWC 9, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 8

EDGERTON – The Edgerton/SWC baseball team remains undefeated on the season with a 3-0 record following a close 1-0 win over Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Thursday.

The Flying Dutchmen will host Minneota on Saturday for their first doubleheader of the season. It will mark the third straight home matchup for them.

Jackson County Central 2, Redwood Valley 1

JACKSON – The Jackson County Central baseball team defeated Redwood Valley thanks to a ninth-inning walk off to seal its second-straight win.

After the Huskies scored right away in the top of the first inning, they were shut out for the rest of the game. In that stretch, the Huskies (2-2) tied the game to send it to extra innings and then won it on a game-winning single from Ben Gallagher.

Brett Rossow started the game for JCC and pitched a complete game.

The Huskies will host St. James on Tuesday next week while Redwood Valley will be in Worthington on Friday.

Softball

Windom 19, Worthington 2

WINDOM – The Worthington Trojans softball team was defeated in a lopsided affair by Windom 19-2 in four innings.

The Trojans (1-2) initially took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Eagles (3-1) immediately responded with a 13-run outburst in the bottom of the first to pull away with the win.

Up next for the Trojans is another road game on Tuesday against Marshall, while Windom will be in Redwood Valley on Monday.

Murray County Central 6, Adrian/Ellsworth 5

SLAYTON – The Murray County Central softball team was able to squeak out a close victory over rival Adrian/Ellsworth at home on Thursday.

The Rebels (3-1) took a 6-2 lead into the final inning before the Dragons (0-3) scored three times in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to one run. But the Rebels managed to hang on and seal the win in the end.

Thea Schneider started for the Rebels and struck out nine batters while giving up only four hits.

Atalie Rosenbrook had two hits and two RBIs to lead MCC at the plate while Calleigh Doeden had two hits and Emmi Peltola, Abigale Loosbrock and Hailey Peschges each had a hit.

Brekkyn Dreesen pitched for the Dragons and she struck out three batters and give up seven hits. She also got two of the team’s four hits and finished with three RBIs at the plate.

Kaylin Gibson and Mersaydes Marten each got a hit and Avery Jenniges had an RBI.

MCC will host Lac Qui Parle Valley on Friday while the Dragons will host Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey next Tuesday.

Edgerton/SWC 17, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 7

MOUNTAIN LAKE – The reigning state champion Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian softball team played their second game this season and defeated Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey.

The Flying Dutchmen moved their record to 2-0 to remain undefeated and they will head to Jackson to take on the Huskies on Friday for their second straight road game.

Golf

Worthington vs Western Christian

HULL, IOWA – The Worthington High School boys and girls golf teams were in Hull, Iowa to take on host Western Christian on Thursday.

The girls team won its third straight meet to start the season, while the boys team was edged by Western Christian to lose its second meet.

On the girls side, the Trojans were victorious by a score of 215-229 and were paced by Madison Beckmann’s individual score of 46. Claire Mahlberg scored 53, Abryona Erwin scored 56 and Claire Meyer scored 60 to round out Worthington’s final team score.

On the boys side, the Trojans were defeated in their second season meet by a score of 172-183. The top four scores for Worthington came from Logan Powers, Andrew Mulder, Spenser Nickel and Wesley Widboom. Powers led the way with a score of 40, Mulder had 45 and Nickel and Widboom each shot 49.

Both the boys and girls golf teams will next be in action on Monday, when they’ll host Fulda.

Track

Windom Eagle Invite

WINDOM — Six track teams from Southwest Minnesota met in Windom Thursday for the Windom Eagle Invite.

Worthington was one of those schools that participated in the invite and the boys team finished second in the team scores with 115 points while the girls team placed third with 74 points.

On the boys side, the Trojans had two individual winners with Fanuel Wolday winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.39 and Caleb Meyer winning the high jump with a jump of 6' 0.

On the girls side, Grace Bates won the 400 meters with a final time of 1:08.74, New Gora won the triple jump with a result of 31' 1 and the team of Bates, Pham Gora, New Gora and Sara Esquivel won the 4x200 relay with a finishing time of 2:00.77.

Host Windom placed first in the boys team scores with 130 points and fourth in the girls standings with 72 points.

Boys individual winners for Windom include Kevin Bleess in the 400 meters (23.79), Cole Purrington in the shot put (41' 6.75), Job Ogeka in the triple jump (40' 7) and the team of Bleess, Braylen Lyons, Thomas Green and Aaden Nauman in the 4x400 relays (3:44.94).

On the girls side, Kaylee Walklin won the 800 meters (2:33.14) and the team of Walklin, Aubri Spielman, Haidyn Sammons and Victoria Robillard won the 4x400 relay (4:42.94).

Jackson County Central was fifth in the boys team standings with 68 points and second in the girls standings with 138.

The two winning events on the boys side for JCC were Clay Malchow in the 100 meters with a time of 11.64 seconds and Malchow, Aiven Farmer, Braeden Tufvesson and Ben Dahlin in the 4x200 in 1:37.40.

Rylie Cother won three events for the JCC girls in the 100-meter hurdles (16.52), the 300-meter hurdles (52.93) and the high jump (4' 10).

Oher wins for the JCC girls include Daysia Tomlin in the 100 meters (13.65), Hannah Carson in the 200 meters (27.85) and Tianna Uilk in the shot put (31' 1.5).

Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda won three events on the boys side with Caleb Appel capturing the 400 meters (56.06), Carson Klein winning the discus (111' 3) and Aiden Lorenzen taking the pole vault (10' 6).

For the HL-O/F girls, Alabama Hoonhorst won the discus (92' 2). In the team standings, the HL-O/F girls were fifth with 56 points while the boys were third with 110 points.

Redwood Valley was fourth in the boys team scores with 109 points and first in the girls standings with 182 points. Adrian/Ellsworth finished last in both the boys and girls team scores with 24 and 32 points respectively.
