Howard Manges

Chief Meteorologist
WBNG, Binghamton NY
Howard Manges

Howard grew up in Hamburg, New York, living a few miles from the shores of Lake Erie. There, he became accustomed to heavy lake effect snow events. In one particular storm during the early 1980s, he remembers there being enough snow to climb up onto the roof of the house and jump into the mountain of snow piled in the front yard! After receiving his driver’s license, he would frequently drive down to the lake and watch thunderstorms as they rolled in across the lake, oftentimes getting up in the middle of the night to do so. It was this passion, awe and desire to know more about the weather that led him to The State University of New York College at Brockport, where he graduated with a B.S. in Meteorology.

Howard began his career in broadcasting as a part-time meteorologist in Rochester, NY. In November 2009, he moved to Binghamton to begin his full time career at WBNG-TV.

Howard earned his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal (#553) from the American Meteorological Society in September 2011 by demonstrating competence in communicating the weather forecast and having a strong understanding of meteorology.

Howard enjoys reading the latest weather magazine publications and applying newly acquired knowledge to his forecasts. In his spare time, he enjoys reading military literature, going fishing, working out, playing a variety of sports including bowling, softball, volleyball and darts; and when vacation is available, visiting his parents in the country. And, like many Buffalonians with their professional sports teams, he has a rabid obsession with watching, and rooting for the Bills and Sabres.

You can count on Howard to bring you the latest forecast information – with a speckling of laughter and good times on 12 News at 5, 5:30, 6, 10 and 11. And remember, he is always just an email away.
