A Sweet Goodbye, Which Larry Hates

Richard Lewis Thanks Larry David for ‘Treating Me Like a God’ on ‘Curb’s’ Last Day of Filming — Watch

On the last day on set for "Curb Your Enthusiasm," the crew gave Larry "something he's going to hate" — and so did his co-stars.

Curb Your Enthusiasm” was not a show known for its sincerity, but even Larry David couldn’t keep genuine appreciation from being vocalized on the last day of shooting. In a video released by HBO to recognize Sunday night’s series finale, late co-star Richard Lewis is shown giving a heartfelt speech on set, shortly after the actors finished filming their final scene.

“I just want to say something,” Lewis said. “Larry David has treated me like a god. All of you have. This is the greatest experience of my career, and I love each and every one of you. I’m honored to be working with arguably the greatest sitcom writer of the last two centuries. Thanks for being so sweet to me.”

Lewis passed away on February 28, 2024, at the age of 76, after suffering a heart attack in his Los Angeles home. At the time, David issued a statement that said, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

In the video, which can be watched in full below, David smiles as Lewis speaks, but tries to walk out of the spotlight before anyone else can express themselves. It doesn’t work. Cheryl Hines, who played Larry’s wife (and eventual ex-wife) in each season of the HBO comedy, stands up and says, “My entire life changed when I met you. […] Larry, I love you.”

His embarrassment doesn’t end there. Showrunner and finale director Jeff Schaffer — who called wrap by saying, “That’s a wrap on the funniest show ever” — also marked the occasion by presenting David with a portrait signed by the cast and crew. The painting appeared in Season 12, Episode 7, “The Dream Scheme,” which David recently said was his favorite episode of the final season.

“If you could somehow remove me from this, it would’ve been much better,” David said after receiving the gift.

Classic Larry.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” is available from HBO and can be streamed on Max. Watch the video from the last day on set below.
