Virginia standout Gretchen Walsh was named the ACC women’s swimmer of the year on Monday, while UVa’s Cavan Gormsen was chosen the women’s freshman of the year.
Todd DeSorbo, who steered the Cavaliers to the women’s team titles at the ACC and NCAA championships, was voted the women’s coach of the year for the fifth straight year.
Walsh, a junior, won three individual NCAA titles (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and broke the NCAA and American records in all three of those events at that meet. She also was on four winning relay teams at that meet.
She also won three individual events and was part of four winning relays at the ACC championships.
Gormsen won the ACC titles in the 1,650 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. She took fifth in the 500 freestyle at the NCAAs.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
SVU to host NCAA regional
Top-ranked Southern Virginia (28-0) will be the host school for a first-round doubleheader and a second-round match in the NCAA Division III championships.
The pairings for the 16-team tournament were announced Monday. SVU earned an automatic bid by winning the Continental Volleyball Conference title last weekend.
Although SVU was named the host school for the regional, the matches will actually be held nearby at Washington and Lee.
SVU will face St. Joseph’s, a 25-6 team from Long Island, New York, on Friday. New York University (18-7), which was ranked ninth in last week’s Division III poll, will face Baruch (19-6) in the other first-round match Friday at W&L. The winners will meet Saturday at W&L for a berth in the final four.
The final four will be held April 26-28 in Dubuque, Iowa.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Radford adds Davidson transfer
Radford announced the signing of former Davidson guard Jarvis Moss on Monday.
The North Carolina native played in 17 games for Atlantic-10 member Davidson as a junior backup this year. He averaged 1.1 points and 6.2 minutes.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Moss spent the first two years of his college career at Stanford. He averaged 1.8 points in 12 games as a sophomore backup in the 2022-23 season. He played in five games as a freshman.
WRESTLING
Va. Tech lands Lehigh transfer
Lehigh wrestler Connor McGonagle announced on Instagram on Monday that he will be transferring to Virginia Tech.
McGonagle competed at 141 pounds in the 2021 and 2022 NCAA championships. He earned an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAAs at 133 pounds but missed that tournament because of an injury.
He went 5-1 this year. He beat Tech’s Sam Latona in overtime at 133 pounds at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic in November.
BASEBALL
VMI to dedicate field
VMI will dedicate the renovated field at Gray-Minor Stadium as Lamore Field at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, prior to its 3 p.m. home game against The Citadel.
VMI revamped its ballpark after last season, adding a new turf surface and updating the outfield walls and dugouts. The field will be named after VMI graduate and donor Michael Lamore.
