Top reason for emergency room visits

WESTON, Fla. – New data is revealing the top reason Americans head to the emergency room and it’s not what many might think.

According to a new study, the most common reasons for visits to the emergency room are from people complaining of stomach and abdominal discomfort.

“And the reason why is because it covers all sorts of processes. You can have an infection; you can have inflammation and then you can have surgical issues. And it can be something very mild such as gastroenteritis, stomach flu or whatever you call it, food poisoning, or it could be something very serious that requires immediate or urgent surgery,” said Dr. Aisha Subhani, chief of emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Weston

She said the second most common reason for adult visits to the E.R. is shortness of breath.

CANDY LOOK-ALIKES HOLD HIDDEN DANGERS

When it comes to kids, more emergency rooms are seeing a disturbing trend: Children being brought in after ingesting chemical laced ‘gummies.’

The candies look like any other that a child might like to eat but may contain harmful substances being used by adults.

“We’re seeing all ages, from infants to teenagers, getting to the marijuana gummies and in the infants it’s very sedating for them they become very sleepy they become unsteady in their walking and have risk of fall. they often have vomiting, said Dr. Heidi Cohen, a pediatric emergency specialist with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

She said it’s not always clear what’s causing the child’s problems which can ultimately lead to a battery of unnecessary and expensive tests.
