N.J. homeowner shoots, kills hammer-carrying burglar, cops say

A Trenton homeowner shot and killed a 34-year-old intruder who used a hammer to break into a residence on Sunday night, authorities said.

The Bert Avenue resident got his gun when he noticed a man carrying a hammer was smashing his Ring camera and banging on his front door at about 10:25 p.m., the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

The homeowner shot Andray Ingram in the chest when Ingram reached the vestibule inside the home, authorities said. Ingram, 34, was found lying on the ground on nearby St. Francis Avenue when police arrived, officials said. Ingram, of Trenton, died of his injuries at an area hospital.

While the homeowner was not charged, the investigation is ongoing.

The prosecutor’s office didn’t disclose the exact location of the shooting. A city official told NJ Advance Media it took place on the 200 block of Bert Avenue.
