UMD Football Making Final Preparations Leading Up to Bemidji State Scrimmage, Team Also Names Six Captains

Hennessey and the Bulldogs hit the field at 4 PM on Wednesday to battle the Beavers.

DULUTH, Minn.- 12 practices down, one to go for the UMD football team in the spring portion of their season.

Of course, that one is their annual spring game.

But this year, there’s a change as they will hit someone other than themselves on Wednesday, when they welcome in Bemidji State for a joint practice and scrimmage.

It’s the first time since 2021 that the Dogs have practiced with another team in the finale.

Head Coach Curt Wiese says he’s been pleased with how the team’s spring has been going, citing the competition for certain positions are heating up.

“A lot of our younger guys have developed. Some of our older guys, that maybe haven’t played a ton over the last couple of years and haven’t been given an opportunity there have stepped up in big roles. We’ve seen a race right now for our number two quarterback spot with A.J. Boarman and Jacob Eggert, both guys have had really good springs. Our backfield is deep, one of which is an addition with Derek Johnson in the backfield, a transfer for us. Those guys have been welcomed additions to our football program and some of those guys that have been with us a year or two that are stepping into major roles have been fun to watch,” said Wiese.

On Monday, UMD also announced their six captains for the fall. They are linebacker Andrew Klopp, defensive back Jacob Mogensen, tight end Sam Pitz, quarterback Kyle Walljasper, lineman Aiden Williams and lastly linebacker Drew Hennessey.

“It’s an honor, all the guys vote on it. I think I’ve been here long enough. Feel like one of the leaders forsure, especially on the defensive line getting those guys ready to go. I don’t know it’s just an honor,” said Hennessey.
