7-year-old killed in northeast Colorado Springs shooting

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 48-year-old man and a 7-year-old child have been identified as the two people found dead after a shooting on the northeast side of Colorado Springs on Friday, April 12, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

The El Paso County Coroner identified the two people on Monday, April 15, as 48-year-old Christopher Rael and a 7-year-old whose identity will not be released due to their age.

The coroner will determine the official cause and manner of death, however, their deaths are being investigated as a homicide and a suicide. The 7-year-old is the victim of the homicide, CSPD said. CSPD confirmed that Rael and the child were known to each other.

Officers originally responded just after 5 a.m. on Friday after reports of a shooting in the 3100 block of Lange Terrace, near North Union Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found the adult and the child dead on scene of apparent gunshot wounds.

This is the 10th homicide in the City of Colorado Springs in 2024. At this time in 2023, there had been six homicides.
