Suspect in post-Mardi Gras triple shooting caught in Georgia, returned to New Orleans, NOPD says
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A man accused of shooting three women in the French Quarter minutes after the end of Mardi Gras has been captured in Georgia and returned to authorities in New Orleans, police said Monday (April 15).
Accused gunman Michael Bates-Browder, 23, was apprehended “earlier this month” in Clayton County (Ga.) and brought back to Louisiana on April 11, the NOPD said.
“If you pull the trigger of a gun in New Orleans, we will find you,” NOPD Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick said in announcing the arrest Monday afternoon. “Our ability to find you is very high.”
Bates-Browder is accused of firing shots that wounded three women who were arguing in the 100 block of Royal Street near Canal Street at 12:23 a.m. on Feb. 14, minutes after the NOPD had completed its ceremonial sweep down Bourbon Street marking the end of Mardi Gras.
Court records show he was booked into the Orleans Justice Center jail on April 12, on two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated second-degree battery, and single counts of obstruction of justice, illegally carrying a weapon, discharging a firearm during a violent crime and aggravated criminal damage to property.
Bates-Browder made his first appearance last Friday in Orleans Parish Magistrate Court, where his bond was set at $675,000.
The accused gunman is scheduled for a preliminary hearing and a bond reduction hearing, both on May 1.
