MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (KFOR) – The Rose State College community, friends and family of 20-year-old RJ Long Jr. gathered for a tribute Friday ahead of the one year anniversary of his death.

Long was shot and killed on campus back in April 2023.

He was a Marine reservist, an active member of his church and a Rose State College student.

The Midwest City Police Department (MCPD) told News 4 the shooting happened in the breezeway next to Rose State’s humanities building.

Brandon Morrissette is the accused gunman, facing charges for First Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm on School Property.

His wife told police she and Long were walking outside the building when her husband confronted them and shot Long. She said Morrissette believe she and Long were having an affair.

Witnesses told police Long was shot and killed while trying to protect her.

Friday’s tribute focused on the last impacting Long has left on the campus and those who knew him. Speakers described him as a kind man, full of love and grounded by faith.

His mother, Kelly Long, spoke about that faith in depth.

“I know beyond a shadow of a doubt where he is and he’s in heaven,” said Long. “He would not only care about being physically fit, but spiritually fit.”

Long further described RJ as her hero, saying that he was always put others need before his own; but that didn’t stop him from appreciating life.

“He was on the go, living his life to the fullest,” said Long. “Because of that, and because of who he is on the inside, everywhere I go, I get to see a bit of RJ wherever I go.”

Friday’s tribute included the unveiling of a permanent brick on campus to honor RJ’s short life. The brick acknowledges his willingness to lay down his life for his friends; and includes scriptures pertaining to his faith.

“We’re proud of RJ,” said Long. “We love him. We miss him, but we know we’re going to see him soon.”

Court records say Morrissette’s trial is set to begin this fall.
