Since 2011, NYCP has been captivating audiences in The Bronx with its compelling performances. We are excited to return to the University of Mount St. Vincent with this dynamic program that opens with William Grant Still’s Mother and Child, an emotionally rich and elegant portrayal of motherhood from this groundbreaking composer. The program also highlights two living American composers: the premiere of Seth Grosshandler’s Concertino for Cello, featuring the accomplished cellist Madeline Fayette, and Eric Nathan’s Double Concerto for Two Violas with celebrated violists Misha Amory and Hsin-Yun Huang as soloists. The finale is Schubert’s much-loved Death and the Maiden, known for its profound emotional depth and intensity.

This program includes selections from great tango masters from the 1930s to the present, such as Alfredo Gobbi, Francisco Canaro, Osvaldo Pugliese, the revolutionary Astor Piazzolla and Pedro Giraudo. In this program, the ensemble offers the audience insight into how tango evolved from marginal venues to cafes and dance halls, and finally to prominent concert halls. The musical journey will be accompanied by short anecdotes about the main figures in the history of tango, as well as some explanation of the principal rhythms of the genre (milonga, waltz, and tango).
