Last night, April 10, instrumental virtuosos, progressive rock innovators and burgeoning collaborators Billy Strings and Les Claypool connected again onstage in Tennessee. When Primus, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle brought the Sessanta Tour–which celebrates the great Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday–to Franklin, Tenn.’s FirstBank Amphitheater, Strings seized the opportunity to demonstrate his improvisatory chops and genre-bending influences by joining Primus yet again, continuing a tradition with a roaring treatment of “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver.”
In this seventh date of the Sessanta run, the pathbreaking bands maintained the tour format of alternating mini-sets in a three-act show. After A Perfect Circle kicked off Act One, Primus took the stage for its first four-song set, opening with the classic “Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweekers” from 1991’s Sailing the Seas of Cheese. The trio continued with “Too Many Puppies” and “Sgt. Baker” before Strings emerged for the endlessly iconic “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver.” Strings offered vocals for the Primus staple’s second verse, then exploded into a race-pace solo as the ensemble opened up a raging, mind-expanding jam. Following Strings’ guest spot, the show went on with seven more mini-sets, through which Primus offered further classics like “Tommy The Cat,” “My Name is Mud,” “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “Southbound Pachyderm.” To close out the show, all three bands joined forces on stage for three selections from the recently released collaborative Sessanta E.P.P.P., then capped off with a team-effort on Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon.”
Primus, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle will continue the Sessanta tour tomorrow, April 12 with a stop at Irving, Texas’ The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory; after this engagement, the tour will make 13 stops through May 4, including two nights at Morrison, Colo.’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on April 25 and 26.
