Several vehicles, garage destroyed in Kittery fire
KITTERY (WGME) -- Several vehicles were destroyed, and a garage was burned, after a fire Friday morning in Kittery.
The fire happened downtown in the Foreside area, near the Walker Street Bridge entrance to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, an area with multiple businesses and apartments as well.
A man who lives nearby says he heard banging on his door to get out before he went outside and saw cars on fire.
"I see my roommate's car, which wasn't, which wasn't on fire yet, and the car that was next to him was on fire, and I was like, 'Oh, this is bad, this is going to get bad,’" witness Cameron Avila said.
He says his roommate's car didn't make it, but he was able to move his.
Traffic was closed into town and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers had to take a different route to work, which did cause significant traffic back-ups.
