Family Friendly Events April 12-18

What's not to love about spring in the Lowcountry? The weather is amazing and it's the perfect time to get outdoors and spend time with your family.

Here's a highlight of family-friendly events taking place in the Charleston area during the week of April 12-18, 2024.

Friday, April 12

Toddler Time will be at the James Island Recreation Complex from 10 a.m.- 12, and at the Daniel Island Rec Center from 9 a.m.- 12, for ages 1-5.

Lowcountry Strawberry Festival at Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant features carnival rides, music and performances, petting zoo, festival food, strawberry pie eating contests, magic shows, frisbee dogs, and the Miss Berry Princess Contest from 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. April 12-14.

The Charleston Museum hosts Fossil Friday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Bunting Natural History Gallery lab. Staff will be on hand to share projects currently being worked on and to help identify your fossil finds. Free for members, $10 for non-members.

Harlem Globetrotters: Don't miss these talented basketball players entertaining audiences on tour at 7 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Sounds on the Square Concert in Summerville will be from 7-9 p.m. at Hutchinson Square.

Saturday, April 13

Summerville Farmers Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with farmers, growers, specialty foods and artisans selling hand-produced and crafted goods in downtown Summerville, behind Town Hall.

Charleston Farmers Market will be held in Marion Square in downtown Charleston from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with roughly 70 farmers and growers, prepared and packaged food offerings, artisan crafts, and live music.

Sunrise Yoga will be at 7 a.m. at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel, for ages 10 and up and open to all fitness levels and abilities.

9th Annual Doughnut Dash 5K: The family-friendly run/walk is held each year in honor of the life and legacy of TyWanza Sanders, and starts at 9 a.m. at the South Windermere Shopping Center, 80 Folly Road Blvd. Register here.

The Third Annual Strawberry Festival at Jedburg Junction will be from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, and 12-4 p.m. on Sunday. Enjoy food, music, and family fun.

The Charleston Area Beekeepers Association and the Charleston Parks Conservancy present the Charleston Honey Bee Expo at Magnolia Park from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. This free, family-friendly event will teach about bees, beekeepers, pollinator plants and how to manage them, and the importance of healthy pollinators in the environment. There will be live music, food trucks, handmade craft vendors, and local honey and bee products.

Founders' Day Festival at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site will be held from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Exchange Club of Daniel Island is holding an event at the Daniel Island Library from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. with a balloon artist, face painting, popcorn, and the Kona Ice Truck, to raise awareness for parents and families.

Lowcountry Cajun Festival: Bringing Louisiana to the Lowcountry, this festival is a full day of Zydeco music, Cajun and Creole foods, kids activities and fun from 12-6 p.m. at James Island County Park.

Tradesman Petting Zoo will be at Tradesman Brewing from 12-3 p.m. with Crosswinds Farm having llamas, cow, bunnies, camel, a goat and a baby kangaroo.

Spring “Food Truck Feastival” will be from 12-4 p.m. at Firefly Distillery in North Charleston with 25 food trucks, music and face painting.

Bizzy Bee Indoor Play Center holds Parents Night Out from 6-9:30 p.m. at their facility in North Charleston for children 3 and up.

Sunday, April 14

Sunday Brunch Farmers Market will be at the Pour House on James Island from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Charleston Country Music Festival will be held from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Jenkins Youth & Family Village off Azalea Drive in North Charleston. Listen to local, regional and national bands at this inaugural festival, and enjoy food and drink from Saltwater Cowboys.

Second Sunday on King will be held from 12-5 p.m. on King Street in downtown Charleston, with the street closed off to vehicle traffic and pedestrians can stroll, shop and eat.

The fourth annual Tour de Earth Day will take place in downtown Charleston. The event starts in Hampton Park (30 Mary Murray Drive) at 12 p.m., and the bike ride will begin around 1 p.m., and end around 4 p.m. Throughout the ride, speakers from the Charleston Climate Coalition will discuss urban farming, native plants, plant-based diets and more. This is a family-friendly event where children can ride for free, and adult tickets are $25. Register here.

Celebrate El Molino Supermarket's first anniversary at 5909 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston with a character meet from 3-4 p.m. and a DJ from 12-5 p.m., face painting from 12-3 p.m., food, giveaways and prizes.

Kidchella - an entertainment festival for the kids, by the kids - will take place at Freedom Park, behind Daniel Island School off Barfield Street, from 2-4 p.m. There will be live performances, food trucks, and a DJ.

Blues by the SeaBrings blankets or chairs and the whole family for the 18th annual complimentary blues concert at the Village Green on Kiawah Island from 3-7 p.m. at Freshfields Village, 165 Village Green Lane, Kiawah Island.

Monday, April 15

Toddler Time will be held at the Daniel Island Rec Center from 9 a.m. to 12 for ages 1-5, and 10 a.m.-12 at the James Island Rec Complex.

Library events:

  • Baby Storytime at the Main Library on Calhoun Street will be at 9:30 a.m. for ages 0-24 months.
  • Storytime at Daniel Island Library will be at 10:30 a.m.
  • Baby Storytime at the John's Island Library will be at 10 a.m.
  • Family Storytime will be at the Sangaree Library at 10:30 a.m. for ages 0-5.

Storytime at the Gibbes Museum of Art will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with the Charleston County Public Library.

Face painting Kid's Night will be at East Bay Deli in North Charleston on University Boulevard from 5-7 p.m., when kids also eat free with a purchase of an adult meal.

Tuesday, April 16

Library events:

  • Baby storytime will be at the Keith Summey Library in North Charleston at 9:30 a.m.
  • Family storytime will be at John L. Dart Library in Charleston at 9:30 a.m.
  • Storytime will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Goose Creek Library for ages 3-5.
  • Family storytime will be at St. Paul's Library in Hollywood at 10:30 a.m.
  • Family storytime will be at Poe Library on Sullivan's Island at 10:30 a.m.
  • Toddler Time Tuesdays will be at the Sangaree Library in Summerville at 10:30 a.m.

The Mount Pleasant Farmers Market will be held from 3:30 -7 p.m. at Moultrie Middle School on Coleman Boulevard, with local vendors, farmers, live music and more fun for families.

The Charleston RiverDogs will take on the Columbia Fireflies for six games in a row from April 16-21 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, 360 Fishburne St., Charleston.

Wednesday, April 17

Stories on the Square will be held at Main Street Reads in Summerville from 9:30 - 10 a.m., with kids of all ages welcome for storytime and treats.

Library events:

  • Baby Storytime will be at the Mount Pleasant Library on Mathis Ferry Road at 9:30 a.m.
  • Baby Storytime will be at Bees Ferry Library in West Ashley at 10 a.m.
  • Baby Storytime will be at Baxter-Patrick Library on James Island at 10 a.m.
  • Family Storytime at St. Paul's Library in Hollywood will be at 10:30 a.m.
  • Toddler Storytime at Hurd Library in West Ashley is at 10:30 a.m.
  • Family Storytime will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Cane Bay Library in Summerville.

The Folly Art Village will be held from 5-9 p.m. at The Washout on Center Street on Folly Beach.

Face painting Kid's Night will be at East Bay Deli in Mount Pleasant in Oakland Market from 5-7 p.m., when kids also eat free with a purchase of an adult meal.

Awendaw Green's Barn Jam will have live music at the Sewee Outpost in Awendaw from 5:30-9 p.m.

The Sound of Charleston will perform everything from Gospel to Gershwin at 7 p.m. at the Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting St. in Charleston. Children 7 and under are free.

Thursday, April 18

Library events:

  • Toddler storytime will be at the Keith Summey Library in North Charleston at 10 a.m.

  • Toddler storytime will be at Bees Ferry Library in West Ashley at 10 a.m.

  • Family storytime will be at Hanahan Library will be at 10:30 a.m. for kids ages 0-5.
  • Family storytime at Moncks Corner Library will be from 10:30-11 a.m. for ages 0-5.

Charleston Jazz FestivalThis 9th annual music festival celebrates Holy City's jazz heritage with a variety of shows from local and internationally known musicians and performers, from April 18-21, at multiple venues throughout Charleston.

Third Thursdays in Summerville will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Hutchinson Square with local stores open late so people can shop, dine and enjoy the historic downtown. The theme for April will be "Flower the Town."

The Charleston Museum hosts "Homeschool History Day" at the Dill Sanctuary on James Island, from 10-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Learn about Civil War history at Battery Pringle, for ages 6-12. Register here.

Moncks Corner Farmers Market will be from 3-7 p.m. at the Market Pavilion at the Moncks Corner Regional Recreational Complex, 418 E Main Street, Moncks Corner.
