HERE’S ONE THAT’S NEAR AND DEAR TO JERRY’S HEART. MANHEIM CENTRAL HIGH GRAD. THE SNOWBALL, THE FAMOUS 2003 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. MANHEIM CENTRAL, PINE-RICHLAND PLAYED IN A BLIZZARD AT HERSHEY PARK STADIUM. INTERESTING FACT THIS GAME WAS NINE THREE AT THE HALF AND AS THE SNOW FELL HARDER, THE POINTS KEPT COMING, GOING AND GOING. MANHEIM SCORED A TOUCHDOWN TO GO AHEAD, KICK THE EXTRA POINT AND THEN SEAN WILT WITH THE BLOCK. KURT AROUND MANHEIM. THAT GAVE MANHEIM CENTRAL THE 3938 DOUBLE OVERTIME WIN FOR THEIR FIRST EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. IT WAS ALSO THE 400TH WIN IN MANHEIM CENTRAL HISTORY. WE LOVE COVERING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL. FRIDAY’S BEEN A GREAT PASSION OF MINE. IT WAS SO GOOD, THOUGH, TO SEE MANHEIM CENTRAL FINALLY GET THAT STATE TITLE. MIKE WILLIAMS CERTAINLY DESERVED IT. AND WHAT A GAME MIKE GROSS, WHO WRITES FOR LANCASTER NEWSPAPERS, ACTUALLY WROTE A BOOK ABOUT THE GAME, CALLING IT THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED, AND IT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST GAME I’VE EVER SEEN. HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE OR PRO. I WAS BLESSED TO BE THERE. WE WERE WORRIED IF WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT THAT NIGHT IT WAS COLD, AND THAT’S ONE OF THE THINGS I REMEMBER THAT GAME IS I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW WELL IT WAS PLAYED, CONSIDERING IT WAS IN A SNOWSTORM CONDITIONS. THEY REALLY, YOU KNOW, THEY DID A GREAT JOB OF PRODUCING. I REMEMBER DOING A LIVE SHOT AT THE END OF THE GAME WITH THE SNOW BLOWING IN MY FACE. I LOVE THOSE. YES, YES, I WAS CELEBRATING THE STAND. We're saying farewell to News 8 sports director Pat Principe, who is retiring.He looked back at his 40 years at WGAL and picked his top five moments. They are in no particular order.No. 3 is the 2003 Snow Bowl.Manheim Central played Pine-Richland for the state football championship during a blizzard at Hersheypark Stadium.The game was 9-3 at the half, and as the snow fell harder, the teams kept racking up the points.The Barons scored a touchdown to get ahead and kick the extra point. Then it was Sean Wilt with the "Block Heard Around Manheim."That gave Manheim Central the 39-38 double overtime win for their first-ever state championship.It was also the 400th win in Barons' history."I love covering high school football. Football Friday's been a great passion of mine," Principe said. "It was so good, though, to see Manheim Central finally get that state title. (Coach) Mike Williams certainly deserved it. What a game. It was probably the best game I’ve ever seen – high school, college or pro."
