A man sought on suspicion of attempted felony vehicular assault was taken into custody Monday after a standoff with law enforcement.

According to a press release from the Sterling Police Department Tuesday, at around 5:15 p.m. Monday officers investigating an unrelated call in the 1000 block of N. Seventh Street spotted 40-year-old Kolt Lee Jones, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for attempted felony vehicular assault in connection with an incident on March 27.

“Officers immediately initiated contact with Jones, who retreated into the trailer, refusing to comply with orders,” the release states.

Jones’ criminal history includes violence and weapons, according to the SPD, so officers decided to evacuate the immediate area “in the interest of community safety,” and called in the Northeast Regional SWAT team to assist.

Sterling Police detectives obtained a search warrant, after which SWAT and negotiators attempted to communicate with Jones, the release states. After several hours in which Jones did not respond, they were able to make contact at around 8:30 p.m. Jones exited the trailer and was taken into custody without further incident.

Jones was arrested and held without bond on charges of attempted vehicular assault, obstructing an officer or firefighter and resisting arrest.
