CHICAGO — A Chicago woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly snuck illegal drugs into the Cook County Jail by hiding them inside a baby’s diaper.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Reality McDowell, a Chicago Lawn resident, has been charged with bringing a controlled substance into a penal institution and possession of a controlled substance.

According to deputies, the charges were handed down after McDowell allegedly attempted to smuggle narcotics in the diaper of a 9-month-old baby during a visit with an inmate at the Cook County Jail.

Authorities say it all unfolded on Monday, Jan 8, when McDowell was scheduled for a visit at the jail.

Sheriff’s Office Investigators were monitoring live security camera footage of visitation when they allegedly spotted McDowell handing the baby over to the inmate.

Authorities say they then allegedly saw the inmate remove a piece of paper that was hidden inside the baby’s diaper.

Following the visit, investigators say they conducted a search of the inmate and found the paper, which appeared to be soaked in an unknown substance.

Laboratory tests later confirmed that the paper had been soaked in the hallucinogenic drug Phencyclidine (PCP).

Authorities later caught up with McDowell and she was taken into custody at her home on Thursday.

McDowell made a court appearance on Friday and she was released from custody pending trial.

According to deputies, the Department of Child and Family Services is also currently investigating the incident.

Deputies say McDowell is just one of 36 people who have been charged with drug-related offenses at the jail in the past year.
