Just two legendary Hollywood personalities hanging out and taking in a show written by one of Broadway’s most celebrated minds, starring some of theater’s biggest stars. Meryl Streep and Martin Short invite you to move along or, perhaps, roll along. Only good buddies and co-stars who like a night out on the town in the building here. 

Streep and Short, who have been the subject of speculation about whether they’re romantically involved since they were spotted enjoying some nice conversation at the Golden Globes 2024 in January, headed to the Great White Way Saturday to see the hit revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Merrily We Roll Along. Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez star in the critically lauded show. Streep and Short, who also co-starred on season three of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, and will reunite in the show’s fourth season, have said through representatives that they are “just very good friends,” and Short himself told Bill Maher loud and clear in late January, “we’re not a couple.”

The two stars sat together during the show at the Hudson Theater, and afterwards went backstage to meet the cast and have an impromptu singalong of “Old Friends,” captured by some of the cast members and shared on social media.

Their friendship is bicoastal: Last month, the pair were spotted leaving dinner in a group of friends in Santa Monica, California. Despite the repeated statements to the contrary, speculation about whether Streep and Short are more than just friends continues to swirl amidst sightings of the two together. 

Streep, 74, quietly separated from her husband of 40-plus years, Don Gummer, it was revealed last October. A representative said that the couple had split years before, and that “while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” Short, 73, was previously married to Nancy Dolman until her death in 2010.
