Premier League news live updates: Latest reaction plus build-up to European fixtures

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has given his players three days off before the build-up begins to the last six games of the season which will determine whether Brighton & Hove Albion qualify for Europe again.

The main aim when the squad returns to training is to improve a tally of four goals during a run of six points from seven games.

De Zerbi said: “The first three days we stay at home and after that we try to improve, try to score more goals, to improve in the last 20 metres.

“Because in the other side of the game (defending) we are doing a good job, not amazing, but we are playing well. In the last 20 metres it is not enough.”

Brighton, knocked out by Roma in the last 16 of the Europa League in March, resume their league campaign at home to Manchester City on April 25.

They are currently tenth in the table, six points behind seventh-placed Manchester United who visit the Amex Stadium on the final day of the season in May.

Most weeks between August and May will see more than 75,000 people descend on Old Trafford to watch Manchester United.

If you take a walk down Sir Matt Busby Way on a matchday, the road is full of pop-up shops selling unofficial merchandise, and supporters — some for the very first time — making their way towards the stadium and food stands.

To some, they may be the envy of United supporters who have to travel from around the country or overseas to watch their team. But the relationship between the local residents and Manchester United is not as straightforward as you may think.

Everton defender James Tarkowski says his side’s 6-0 defeat to Chelsea was the “most embarrassed” he’s felt during his career.

Goals from Nicolas Jackson and Alfie Gilchrist in addition to four goals from Cole Palmer, sealed a dominant victory for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Tarkowski, 31, apologised to Everton fans for the result, saying that the players had taken full responsibility for the defeat.

He told Monday Night Football: “We underperformed. It is the most embarrassed I’ve felt as an individual and as part of a team during my time as a footballer.

“We can only apologise to the fans that spend their hard-earned money, traveling across the country supporting us. For them to turn on a Monday night and witness that. It is on us the players. No one else.

“We can’t go pointing fingers at managers or staff. They give us everything we need to go out there and perform. Tonight we didn’t. We have to accept that.

“No excuses on our behalf but that was nowhere near the level we expect of ourselves. We need to brush ourselves down, because there is a big few weeks coming up.”

Everton, who are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, are next in action against Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino has criticised the argument between his Chelsea players over who got to take a penalty during his side’s 6-0 victory over Everton on Monday.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty late into the second half at Stamford Bridge after Cole Palmer, who scored four goals on the night, was fouled by Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson were seen having an altercation in the penalty area, arguing over who got to take the resultant spot kick.

Several Chelsea players intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but it was captain Conor Gallagher who eventually took the ball off Madueke and gave it to Palmer, who dispatched from the spot.
