More than two weeks ahead of the annual Lee County Relay for Life, the group is nearly halfway to its fundraising goal for the American Cancer Society.
The Lee County Relay for Life will return to the Courthouse Square in downtown Opelika at 6 p.m. on May 3. The event, which already includes 32 teams, has raised nearly $50,000 of the $100,000 goal.
“Fighting cancer is personal, and it’s something almost everyone can share in because we all know someone who has been affected by cancer,” said Debra Causey, co-chair with her husband, Randy Causey, and a two-time cancer survivor. “Joining with those who are fighting the disease, whether they have been diagnosed or because a loved one or friend has, brings us together as one group for a cause we can all get behind.”
The May 3rd event is slated to last from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. and will include games, activities, entertainment and fundraising opportunities throughout.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m., followed by the Survivor's Walk, where each survivor introduces themselves and shares how long they’ve survived cancer. There is also the Caregiver's Lap, where caregivers join survivors to signify the importance of the role of caregivers.
From there, teams begin their walks, with a goal of having at least one member walking in support of cancer survivors.
At 9 p.m. that night, the Luminaria Ceremony begins. According to a news release from Relay for Life, the walkway will be lined with lighted bags decorated to honor those fighting cancer and remembering those who have passed away. During the ceremony, participants are asked to quietly walk a lap. Luminary bags can be purchased in advance or the night of Relay For Life at a cost of $5 each.
Preceding the opening ceremony, a Survivors Reception will be held near the fountain from 5 p.m.-5:45 p.m. All survivors are welcome, and they will join together after welcoming ceremonies to walk the first lap.
The theme for this year is "Every Cancer, Every Life." Lee County Relay for Life dates back to the 1990s and has continued over the years to raise money for the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research.
"That's why this year's theme is every cancer, every life, save every life possible, hopefully one day every life from hopefully every cancer that there is," Randy Causey said during February's First Lap event. "No matter why you take part in relay, one thing is clear: Every step taken and every dollar raised, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives. With your help, we aren't just fighting one type of cancer, we're fighting for every birthday threatened by every type of cancer in our community. "
With 17 days left until this year's Relay for Life, Randy Causey said business sponsorships are still available and its not too late to register a team.
