Second arrest made for deadly shooting outside Waterbury court

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) – Two people are facing charges in connection with a deadly shooting that happened outside of a Waterbury courthouse, according to police.

Dante Howell, 29, of Meriden, was charged with murder, conspiracy at murder, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, illegal transfer of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment first-degree, breach of peace second-degree, and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Officers found Howell in Middlefield on Wednesday and took him into custody. He was held on a $5 million bond.

Deera Nelson, 21, of Meriden, was charged with murder, conspiracy at murder, and hindering prosecution.

Nelson turned herself in to police on Thursday. She was held on a $3 million bond.

The shooting happened on March 21 in the area of 400 Grand Street, police said.

Police said 26-year-old Jarron Chapman was leaving the courthouse when he was shot. He attended court proceedings earlier in the day.

Chapman later died of his injuries.

Waterbury police said additional arrests are expected in the investigation.
