MEDINA, Ohio – They might want to change their group’s name.

On the evening of April 9, the second quarterly meeting of 100+ Women Who Care was held at the Blue Heron Brewery meeting room in Medina.

Cathy Posner opened the meeting with a welcome and the announcement that the group now has 220 active members.

Since the group began in April 2011, members have raised just over $462,000 for Medina County charities.

Posner thanked Tracy Bayer, who generously sponsored the meeting.

Three organizations are chosen at random to present their requests for funds. This quarter, they included Spark Medina, the Medina Senior Adult Foundation and YAHAB.

Jan Simmons described Spark Medina as a group that creates and promotes programs that teach empathy to young people through schools, churches and clubs.

Laura Toth requested funding for the Medina Senior Adult Foundation, which serves nutritious meals to adults 60 and older in locations throughout the county. Each year, 3,500 meals are served.

Janet George and Cindy Maxwell told the group about YAHAB, a local nonprofit created by Valeria Long to supply clothing at no cost to clients who need it. YAHAB has served over 750 people through referrals by 12 local non-profits. The money raised would be used for rent at the clothing outlet.

The members in attendance voted to give the money to YAHAB this quarter.

The organization receiving theJanuary donation of $11,462 was Majestic Equine Connections LLC, an organization that provides horseback riding activities to persons who have disabilities.

The funds they received were used for a rider scholarship, the purchase of a new therapy horse, medical care fora sick horse, rider helmets, purchase of hay and payment for a substitute instructor.

The next 100+ Women Who Care meeting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. July 9, again at the Blue Heron Event Center. Any woman interested in joining the group is welcome to attend.

Membership requires a donation of$50 or $100 four times a year and the desire to learn about and to help local charitable organizations.
