MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is charged with attempted first-degree murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend’s friend for trying to break up a fight in February.

Jason Chism, 44, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and convicted felon in possession of a handgun on Friday.

These charges stem from an incident that took place on February 3, when Chism and his girlfriend were fighting at the victim’s home.

She told police that when she tried to break up the fight, Chism turned his attention to her. He allegedly told her, “H–, you’re next.”

Chism got into his vehicle and left the scene briefly before returning. Chism then got out of the driver’s seat, holding a black handgun and allegedly told the victim, “B—-, I am going to fight you.”

The victim said that’s when Chism pointed the handgun at her and fired.

When officers arrived at the scene, they recovered a spent shell casing at the residence.

The victim suffered injuries from the shooting to her right leg and went to Methodist South Hospital for treatment.

When shown a six-person lineup by police, the victim was able to identify Chism as the person who shot her.

Chism is being held on a $175,000 bond.
