SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One man is dead after an officer involved shooting that included two Sullivan County Deputies on Wednesday.

Sgt. Kevin Getz with Indiana State Police confirmed 54-year-old Cameron Lee Atkins was killed in the shooting, which took place around 4 p.m. in the 1800 block of Tulip Tree Lane.

“They [the deputies] were going to meet with him to discuss some particular specifics in regards to a protective order that had been served to him earlier in the afternoon,” he said. “They arrived at approximately 3:30, the Sheriff’s Office then received contact from the deputies at approximately 4 p.m. indicating shots were fired.”

Getz added that Atkins reportedly pointed a gun at deputies before the shots were fired.

“According to the initial stages of the investigation, the two deputies fired their department-issued handguns after a male subject, identified as Cameron Lee Atkins, age 54, of Sullivan, pointed a firearm at them,” Getz said.

Police confirmed a protective order was in effect in connection to a domestic dispute that took place Tuesday night.

“Troopers from the Indiana State Police and Sheriff Deputies from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, the Shelburn Police Department and the Sullivan City Police Department responded to a domestic incident at this very residence last night,” he said.

Atkins was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were believed to be injured.

Getz said the investigation into the incident will remain ongoing. The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. An autopsy of Atkins is pending.

“This investigation is still early,” he said. “The Indiana State Police is going to do its due diligence and conduct a very thorough investigation.”
