The Japan Coast Guard dispatched patrol vessels and helicopters to search for two men who went missing after two cargo ships collided off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture on Aug. 24.

The accident caused the Japanese ship Izumi Maru to capsize in the Kii Channel about 15 kilometers from the town of Hidaka.

Three Izumi Maru crew members, in their 30s to 70s, were rescued by the other cargo ship, registered in Liberia.

But the whereabouts of the two other crew members, in their 50s and 60s, were still unknown on the morning of Aug. 25.

The Liberia-flagged ship radioed the 5th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters at around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 about the collision. No injuries were reported on this cargo ship.

The 499-ton, 75-meter-long Izumi Maru is owned by Izumi Kaiun, a Tokyo-based shipping company.

According to Izumi Kaiun, the Izumi Maru left Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, on Aug. 22 and was scheduled to arrive in Okayama Prefecture on the morning of Aug. 25, carrying scrap metal.
