A judge denied bond Friday for a Jackson murder suspect.
Marcus Johnson was taken into custody earlier this week after leading several law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase from Vicksburg to Rayville, Louisiana.
Johnson, 33, is accused of attacking 25-year-old Carlos Collins with an axe before shooting him multiple times early Tuesday at Tapestry Northridge Apartments.
Collins' family said he had filed several restraining orders against Johnson, who was Collins' ex-boyfriend. According to Friday's hearing in municipal court, Collins filed an order of protection against Johnson on March 5.
A witness at the apartment complex reported hearing someone yell, "Marcus, stop," followed by the sound of gunshots.
Investigators said Johnson confessed to the shooting after he was captured. It was revealed during Friday's hearing that Collins had a Ring doorbell camera that recorded the murder.
"My brother was a light in this dark world. Even though now he's gone, he's still overpowering the darkness that Marcus bestowed upon him. My brother will live on," said Collins' sister, Aliesha Hudson. "He was a kind person, a loving person. Everyone loved being around Carlos."
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Johnson worked for JPD for eight months. Wade said Johnson was facing disciplinary actions but quit on Sept. 10, 2013, before he could be terminated.
Johnson worked as a private security guard for five years. Johnson's public defender argued during the hearing that Johnson acted in self-defense.
