TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Toledo City Council approved a special use permit for Washington Local Schools to build a new middle school.

Council members unanimously approved the measure on Wednesday. The school will be called Whitmer Middle School and will go up on Quast Lane near Harvest Lane.

Washington Local Schools says it will be a 200,000 square-foot facility that would enroll more than 1,500 sixth through eighth graders, replacing Washington and Jefferson Junior High Schools.

Some residents previously brought up concerns about sewers and roads surrounding the new building, along with an increase of traffic during pick-up and drop off times. Traffic engineers conducted a study that determined school traffic would not add significant slow-downs.

The new middle school is expected to open in 2026.
