'An ever safer community': Bowling Green's Vision Zero plan aims to make roads safer

The city hopes to reach zero fatalities from road accidents and crash-related injuries by 2045.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green city leaders are undertaking an effort to reduce traffic accidents and make roads safer.

Vision Zero is an effort to reach zero fatalities from road accidents and crash-related injuries by 2045. Bowling Green City Council unanimously approved a resolution on the effort during a meeting Monday.

The commitment is not a new thing, but putting it in writing so that we can be part of the effort is," said council member William Herald.

From 2021 to 2023, there were 2 fatalities in Bowling Green. One was at the intersection of Newton and Brim roads on the north side of the city and the other was in the downtown area.

Herald believes there are some physical steps the city can take to slow down drivers and keep roads safe and that there are multiple groups in Bowling Green, like the city's sidewalk commission, that work to continually improve transportation and safety.

"We take very seriously our transportation system in Bowling Green," he said. "Not just vehicles, but pedestrians, bicyclists, etc. We want to make this an ever safer community,” said Herald.

Amanda Gamby, communications director for the city of Bowling Green, said the effort will hopefully lead to a safer community.

I think that that's priority here," she said of Vision Zero's ultimate goal. "I think that we've been doing a lot of things with our traffic and mobility, certain ways for a long time. And I think that this Vision Zero opens our eyes to other ways of doing things and hopefully leads us to a safer community."
