TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - As the 55th anniversary of the MLK Kitchen for the Poor nears, we are learning what is next for the organization.

The Savage family has been feeding the hungry in Toledo since 1969. Henry Savage Jr., the executive director of the Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor said he has no plans of slowing down.

“55 years and we still have quite a need for our services,” Savage Jr. said.

He said serving people is part of his family’s legacy. A legacy that has been passed down through generations.

“The poor you’re going to have with you always, so we’re going to always have to be looking out for a certain amount of people,” Savage Jr. said.

Now, he is working to train the next generation to take over the family mission.

“My dad used to tell us all the time, somebody ought to know that you were here, and what he meant was that we should be doing enough that the community knows that we’re here and we’re here to help,” Savage Jr. said.

Savage Jr. reflected on the impact the MLK Kitchen has had on the community.

“I consider it wonderful that we’ve been able to do that,” Savage Jr. said. “We’re going to add on to the kitchen and our building here and get rid of all this storage we have here in our dining area so that we can have our dining area back.”

Savage Jr. also said that they are looking into childcare.

MLK Kitchen for the Poor is celebrating its 55 years of service with a fundraiser dinner at 6 p.m. on May 4. For more information or tickets to the dinner, click here.
