CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) - When it comes to repeated success in high school athletics, Glenwood may have found the perfect recipe. Head softball coach, Von Edgar, says part of his squad's winning ways stem from the town's culture.

"This is a bat and ball town," Edgar said. "We have a great football team and basketball teams. We all saw what the girls team did, but being brought up in this neighborhood, you care about bat and ball."

It's hard to argue with Edgar, now in his 24th season leading the team, as his Titans softball squad is off to a 12-1 start to the season. During his tenure, Glenwood has only failed to miss out on the regional title three times. In 2009, they finished second place in state, but took the crown five years later in 2014.

Student-athletes are taught the essentials in middle school, so by the time they come into high school, they're ready to thrive in variety level competition.

"The more important it is to their parents and to this community, [the players] feel that importance and it gives them good feedback," Edgar said.

Furthermore, it establishes that bond between the girls on the field to ensure communication and understanding keeps everyone on the same page.

"There is never a point where anyone is better than every one else," said junior catcher Taryn Griffith. "We're all equal and we blend really well together."

Team bonding is part of developing the chemistry. One way to ensure there's a constant connection are the efforts to keep certain traditions alive. Sophomore pitcher Irie Lohrenz says what some may say is insignificant, are actually important to keeping Glenwood on the charge.

"We all wear ribbons in our hair at every game, we have the exact same team huddle, and we all say the same things to each other," she said.

The players also recognize the value in having an experienced coach like Edgar. Not only does he understand the game down to its smallest detail, he also has a deep caring for his team, even beyond the diamond.

"It's the best feeling to have a coach who just loves you inside and out," Griffith said.

The Titans still have a little over half their schedule to play, but the growing confidence in Chatham has the Titans poised to conquer central Illinois yet again.
